Why New Hampshire car crash fatalities are on the rise

On Behalf of | Jul 15, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Vehicles and roads have become safer over time. Researchers and analysts have identified vehicle features and design elements that can significantly reduce the risk of major motor vehicle collisions. In theory, it is possible to use that information to noticeably increase the overall safety of people in traffic.

Unfortunately, the opposite has occurred in recent years. According to an analysis of collision statistics, major crashes are on the rise across the United States. In fact, crash risk is currently higher in New Hampshire than it is in many other parts of the country.

What recent crash statistics uncover

When looking at the data gathered between 2018 and 2022, the trend is rather obvious. Over those years, New Hampshire saw a 47% increase in traffic deaths. 2018 saw 101 people die in local crashes, while collisions claimed the lives of 148 people in New Hampshire in 2022.

Even though the recorded number of miles traveled dropped by 3%, the number of deaths increased far more than the national average over that time. Across the United States over the same years, traffic fatalities increased by 18%. 2023 also saw many fatal collisions, although the final data for the year is not yet available.

What has contributed to the increase in fatal crashes?

There are many reasons for the increase in collisions, but negligent driving habits are a top concern. Researchers attempting to make sense of the sudden and worrisome increase in traffic fatalities specifically point to an increase in unsafe driving habits as the underlying cause of many fatal collisions in New Hampshire.

Drivers now self-report unsafe behaviors in larger numbers than they previously did. Motorists demonstrate a greater inclination to speed even when the road conditions are not optimal. Many drivers fail to use their turn indicators and make conduct rolling stops at intersections. Texting while driving and getting behind the wheel after drinking or consuming mind-altering drugs also represent unsafe habits noted in greater numbers in recent months.

Economic pressures may also contribute to traffic safety concerns. People may be more likely to rush when driving for work or to be out on the roads while fatigued if they have to maintain two jobs. The unfortunate reality is that the negligence and misconduct of a few people can imperil everyone else that they encounter in traffic.

No one is truly safe when there are others openly engaging in negligent traffic conduct. Injured in collisions sometimes need more support than insurance provides. The same is true of those who lose a loved one in a preventable crash.
