Two years of improvement in traffic fatality figures

Drivers in New Hampshire may be pleased to learn that 2018 marks the second year where traffic fatalities have dropped. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that the 2.4% drop in fatalities is due in part to advancements in modern automobile safety features.

The behavior of drivers may also play a role. Alcohol impaired fatalities dropped by 3.6% in 2018. Additionally, there was a 5.7% drop in fatalities connected to speeding. Motorcycle fatalities fell by 4.7%.

It was not all good news though. Pedestrian deaths rose in in 2018 by 3.4%. There was also an increase in the number of individuals killed in bicycle accidents. The bicycle accidents happened more frequently at night, and some of the cyclists had alcohol in their system.

Many people feel that more needs to be done to further minimize the number of traffic-related deaths that happen every year. For example, in 2018, 2,841 deaths in crashes were the result of distracted drivers. Still, that is a 12.4% decrease from what was seen the previous year.

Collisions involving large trucks took the lives of 4,951 people in 2018. Over the past 10 years, fatalities involving large trucks have risen by 46.5%. Some question the wisdom of the current president's administration's push for proposals that would allow drivers to work up to 17 hours a day.

When a person is the victim of an automobile accident, it can feel like their life has changed overnight. They may have lingering injuries and medical bills to be concerned about. They may not be able to work, and this could result in them getting behind on things like rent or mortgage payments. A personal injury attorney may be able to work with their client and help them identify who was responsible for the accident. Attorneys may be able to help victims get the compensation for the accident.
